What do all three share?
According to HP's spec sheets, all three print 40 pages a minute in black and white, print both sides automatically, hold 350 sheets (900 with an optional extra tray) and are built for heavy use: HP recommends 750 to 4,000 pages a month and rates them for up to 80,000. They all use HP 151A toner, rated at about 3,050 pages, or the high-yield 151X at about 9,700.
That puts them a level above small desktop lasers like the HP M141w, which HP recommends for up to about 1,000 pages a month.
Print-only or all-in-one?
The 4003dn only prints. The 4103dw and 4103fdw add a flatbed scanner and a 50-sheet document feeder that scans both sides of a stack in one pass, plus a 2.7-inch colour touchscreen.
If your office copies or scans contracts, invoices or forms, the all-in-one saves a separate machine and a lot of time.
Wi-Fi, Ethernet and fax
- 4003dn: network cable and USB only, no Wi-Fi.
- 4103dw: Wi-Fi, network cable and USB.
- 4103fdw: the same as the 4103dw plus a fax line.
For a shared office printer, a cabled network connection is the most reliable. Wi-Fi helps when there's no network point nearby.
Running costs and buying advice

Before you buy a printer: what to check
A cheap printer can be expensive to own. A few minutes of checking now saves money every month afterwards.
Check the cost of ink or toner, not just the printer. Find the cartridge or bottle it uses, look up its price and how many pages it prints, and work out the cost per page.
Match the printer to what you print. Mostly black and white documents suit a laser printer; colour, photos and mixed use suit an ink tank. Need to scan and copy too? Get an all-in-one.
Make sure it's genuine and new. Ask whether the box is sealed and whether the starter ink or toner is included. Prices far below other sellers are a warning sign.
Ask about the warranty and who honours it. Keep the receipt and check whether the seller or a local service partner handles repairs.
Check how you'll connect. USB only, or Wi-Fi and phone printing? Confirm before buying if several people will share it.
If it will sit unused for weeks, think twice about inkjet. Ink can dry in the print head. A laser printer copes better with occasional use.
