Short answer
What does a church office print?
Church printing has a rhythm: a rush every week before Sunday, plus occasional big jobs.
- Weekly bulletins and order of service: many copies of the same pages, mostly black and white.
- Programmes for weddings, funerals and thanksgivings: larger runs, often folded, sometimes with photos.
- Flyers and posters for events: colour, sometimes A3.
- Letters, receipts and records: everyday office printing.
Estimate how many copies you print in a typical week, and in your busiest week, before choosing.
For weekly bulletins: speed and low cost per page
Bulletins are a volume job: the same pages, many copies, every week. A black and white laser printer or copier does this fastest and cheapest per page.
- Small churches: a laser all-in-one such as the HP LaserJet M141w prints, copies and scans with Wi-Fi. HP recommends up to about 1,000 pages a month.
- Growing churches: a faster office laser such as the HP LaserJet Pro 4003dn, which prints 40 pages a minute and both sides automatically, so a folded bulletin takes one sheet.
- Large churches: an A3 copier with a document feeder, such as the Canon imageRUNNER 2425i, handles big runs, copies multi-page originals in one go and prints A3 for folded booklets.
For flyers and programmes with photos: an ink tank
Colour on a laser printer is expensive. For event flyers, programme covers and photos, a colour ink tank printer costs far less per page. Popular choices are the Epson L3250, Canon G3410 and HP Smart Tank 581; see our comparison of all three. For high-quality photo programmes, the 6-colour Epson L8050 is a step up.
For large colour jobs like funeral brochures in the hundreds, it's often cheaper to send them to a print shop than to print them yourself.
What to check before buying for the church
- Who will use it. Volunteers change, so choose a printer that's simple to operate and keep the manual handy.
- Running costs. Work out the cost per page with the calculator for your weekly volume.
- Toner and ink availability. Buy a model whose supplies are sold nearby, and check the ink code matches your unit's region.
- Servicing. For a copier, agree who services it and how fast; a breakdown on a Saturday night is a real risk. See what a service contract should cover.
- Power protection. Use a stabiliser or UPS.

Questions people ask
What is the best printer for a church office?
Usually two machines: a black and white laser printer or copier for weekly bulletins, and a colour ink tank printer for flyers and photos. Small churches can start with a laser all-in-one plus an ink tank; large churches printing hundreds of programmes weekly should consider an A3 copier with a document feeder.
What printer is best for printing church bulletins?
A black and white laser printer or copier with automatic two-sided printing, so a folded bulletin uses one sheet. For hundreds of copies every week, an A3 copier with a document feeder is fastest and cheapest per page.
Should a church buy a photocopier or a printer?
A printer is enough for a small church printing a few hundred pages a week. A photocopier suits larger churches with big weekly runs, booklets and frequent copying of multi-page originals, but it needs servicing.
