Canon photocopier error codes (E000, E602 and more): what to do

Short answer

On Canon imageRUNNER copiers, codes starting with E (such as E000, E001, E602) are service errors. Canon's advice is to turn the copier off and on once; if the code comes back, it needs an engineer. Messages like "Replace the toner cartridge", "Load paper" and paper jams you can usually fix yourself by following the steps on the copier's screen.

What does an E-code on a Canon copier mean?

Canon's error-code database for imageRUNNER copiers describes every E-code family in the same way: "A service error has occurred." That covers codes beginning E001, E002, E003, E020, E021, E602 and others. Canon's advice is the same for all of them:

  • Turn the copier off, wait, and turn it back on.
  • If the error persists, an engineer visit may be required.

Canon doesn't publish what each specific code means for users, so be wary of anyone who diagnoses a code over the phone without seeing the machine. Write down the exact code before calling a technician; it helps them bring the right parts.

"Contact your local authorized Canon dealer"

This screen appears with a code when the copier can't recover on its own. Canon's manual for the imageRUNNER 2425 says to restart the copier and wait more than 10 seconds before turning it back on. If the message returns, note the code, unplug the copier and contact your dealer.

Some models offer a Limited Functions Mode on this screen, so you can keep using the functions that still work, for example scanning, while you wait for the engineer.

Toner, paper and jam messages you can fix

  • "Prepare a new toner cartridge" is an early warning: buy toner now so you're not stopped later.
  • "Replace the toner cartridge" means the toner has run out. Open the front cover and swap the cartridge as the screen shows. For the imageRUNNER 2425 and 2425i, that's C-EXV 60 toner; compare current toner prices.
  • "Load paper": fill the tray shown.
  • Paper jams: the screen shows where the jam is, with an animation. Canon says to follow the on-screen steps, not to force paper out, and not to turn the copier off while clearing a jam. If you can't remove the paper, call your dealer rather than pulling hard and tearing it.

How to avoid copier breakdowns

Many service calls start with the same causes: poor-quality toner, damp or curled paper, dust, and power problems. Protect the copier with a stabiliser or UPS, keep paper dry, and use genuine toner; our guide on checking toner is original shows what to look for. A maintenance contract with scheduled servicing catches worn parts before they fail; see what a service contract should cover.

Questions people ask

What does E000 mean on a Canon photocopier?

Canon describes its E-codes as service errors. Turn the copier off and on once; if the code comes back, contact a Canon dealer or qualified engineer. Canon doesn't publish a user-level meaning for each specific code.

Can I fix a Canon copier E-code myself?

Only by restarting it. If the E-code persists after a restart, Canon says an engineer visit may be required. Opening the machine yourself can make the fault worse and void a warranty.

Why does my Canon copier say "Contact your local authorized Canon dealer"?

The copier has hit an error it can't recover from. Restart it and wait more than 10 seconds before turning it on. If the message returns, note the code and call your dealer. Some models let you keep using working functions in Limited Functions Mode.

Which toner does the Canon iR 2425 use?

Canon C-EXV 60 toner, rated at about 10,200 pages at 6% coverage. Versions imported from Asia may use different toner, so check the code on your current cartridge.
