Short answer
How does DTF printing work?
DTF (direct-to-film) prints your design onto a special film using coloured inks plus a layer of white ink. While wet, the print is coated with an adhesive powder, which is then cured with heat. You press the film onto the garment with a heat press and peel it away, leaving the design on the fabric.
Because it uses white ink and adhesive, DTF works on cotton, polyester and blends, in light or dark colours. That flexibility is why it has become popular with branding shops.
How does sublimation printing work?
Sublimation prints your design onto special paper with sublimation ink. Under a heat press, the ink turns to gas and bonds into polyester fibres or into specially coated items like mugs and plates. The print becomes part of the material, so you can't feel it, and it doesn't crack or peel.
The catch: sublimation only works on polyester (or polyester-coated items) in white or light colours. It won't work on plain cotton or dark garments, because there's no white ink.
Which lasts longer and feels better?
- Sublimation prints are inside the fibres, so they feel completely soft and last as long as the fabric. Excellent for sports jerseys.
- DTF prints sit on top of the fabric as a thin, flexible layer. You can feel it slightly. Properly cured DTF holds up well to washing; poorly cured transfers can crack or peel, which is why technique and good consumables matter.
What does each cost to start in Ghana?
- DTF: a DTF printer runs GH₵18,500 to GH₵68,000 new, depending on size and whether a powder shaker and dryer are included. Add a heat press (from GH₵700), film, ink, powder and a computer for designs.
- Sublimation: a sublimation printer starts from GH₵2,500, often a converted ink tank printer. Add a heat press, sublimation paper and blank polyester items or mugs.

Which should you start with?
Start by listing what your customers will actually order. Church and school T-shirts in many colours, cotton uniforms and dark garments point to DTF. Football jerseys, polyester event shirts and branded mugs point to sublimation.
Many shops start with one and add the other later. Sublimation is the cheaper way to test demand; DTF covers more of the market from day one. Whichever you choose, follow our checklist before paying: ask what's included, see a test print on the actual fabric, and check that consumables and spare print heads are sold locally. Questions people ask
Is DTF better than sublimation?
Neither is better overall. DTF works on more fabrics and colours, including cotton and dark garments. Sublimation gives a softer, permanent print but only on light-coloured polyester and coated items like mugs.
Can sublimation be used on cotton T-shirts?
Not on plain cotton. Sublimation ink bonds with polyester fibres, so it only works well on polyester or high-polyester blends in light colours. For cotton, DTF is the usual choice.
How much does it cost to start a DTF printing business in Ghana?
DTF printers were listed at GH₵18,500 to GH₵68,000 new in October 2026, and heat presses from GH₵700. Add film, ink, powder, a computer and design software. Ask sellers what their package includes, because many cheap listings are printer only.
Do I need a heat press for DTF and sublimation?
Yes. Both methods transfer the print with heat and pressure. A 38x38cm flat press covers most T-shirt work; combo presses add mug and cap attachments.
