Ink tank vs laser printer: which is better for home, office or shop use?

Short answer

Choose an ink tank printer if you print colour, photos or a mix of everything at a low cost per page; choose a laser printer if you mostly print black and white documents fast and in volume. In Ghana, new ink tank printers cost GH₵2,100 to GH₵16,800 and A4 laser printers GH₵1,650 to GH₵12,599 in October 2026, so both are affordable to buy. The real difference is what each page costs you to print and what you print most.

What is the difference between an ink tank and a laser printer?

An ink tank printer is an inkjet with large refillable tanks instead of small cartridges. You top it up from bottles, which hold enough ink for thousands of pages, so each page costs very little.

A laser printer uses powder toner in a cartridge and fuses it onto the paper with heat. Laser prints are crisp, dry instantly and don't smudge, and the printer is fast. Most affordable laser printers are black and white only.

Both come as print-only models and as all-in-ones that also scan and copy.

Which is cheaper to run: ink tank or laser?

For most people the ink tank is cheaper per page, especially for colour. A set of refill bottles costs little and prints a lot. Small laser printers often use low-capacity toner cartridges, which push the cost per page up.

The picture changes at office volumes. Larger laser printers and office copiers use high-capacity toner that brings the cost per black page down, and they keep up with heavy daily printing without slowing.

The only way to know for your situation is to work it out: divide the price of the ink or toner by the pages it's rated for. Our cost-per-page calculator does it for you, and our toner price list shows current toner prices in Ghana.

Which prints better?

  • Photos and colour: ink tank. Inkjets blend colour smoothly and handle photo paper, which most lasers can't.
  • Text documents: laser. Sharp, smudge-proof text that dries instantly is what lasers do best.
  • Stickers and labels: it depends on the material. Many sticker papers are made for inkjet, and some for laser, so check the pack before you buy either.

Which printer is best for home use?

An ink tank printer suits most homes: children's school work, the occasional photo, and documents in colour, all at a low cost per page. New ones start at GH₵2,100 in Ghana.

One caution: inkjets don't like sitting unused for weeks. If you print rarely, the print head can dry and clog. If you print only now and then, and only black text, a small laser printer is the more reliable choice because toner doesn't dry out.

Which printer is best for office use?

For an office printing mostly letters, invoices and reports, a laser printer is usually best: fast, reliable, and sharp on text. If staff also need to scan and copy, get a laser all-in-one; these start at GH₵2,325 new.

If your office prints thousands of pages a month, look at an A3 office copier instead, which is built for that volume. Compare them in our photocopy machine price list.

Which printer is best for shop use?

A print shop near a school or office usually needs both: a laser printer or copier for fast black and white work, and an ink tank printer for cheap colour prints. Customers pay more for colour, and an ink tank keeps that colour cheap to produce.

Questions people ask

Is an ink tank or laser printer better?

Neither is better for everyone. Ink tank printers are better for colour, photos and a low cost per page; laser printers are better for fast, sharp black and white documents and for printers that sit unused between jobs.

Which is cheaper, ink tank or laser printer?

To buy, both are similar: in October 2026, new ink tank printers cost GH₵2,100 to GH₵16,800 in Ghana and A4 laser printers GH₵1,650 to GH₵12,599. To run, ink tanks are usually cheaper per page, especially in colour, while large laser printers with high-capacity toner become cheap for heavy black and white printing.

Can an ink tank printer dry out?

Yes. If an ink tank printer isn't used for several weeks, ink can dry in the print head and cause streaks or gaps. Printing a page or two every week usually prevents it. Laser toner is a dry powder and doesn't have this problem.

Which printer is best for a small business in Ghana?

For mostly documents, a laser all-in-one that prints, scans and copies. For colour marketing material or a print shop, add an ink tank printer. If you print thousands of pages a month, an A3 office copier works out cheaper per page.
