What does the 750 add over the 581?

According to HP's spec sheets, the step up from the 581 to the 750 is a big one for office use:

  • Automatic two-sided printing, which saves paper and time. The 581 makes you turn pages over by hand.
  • A 35-sheet document feeder for copying and scanning stacks of pages. The 581 has a flatbed only.
  • Faster printing: 15 pages a minute black and 9 colour (ISO), against 12 and 5.
  • A 250-sheet paper tray instead of 100 sheets.
  • Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi, so it connects more reliably to office networks.
  • Higher workload: HP rates it for up to 5,000 pages a month, against 3,000 for the 581.

What does the 790 add over the 750?

The 790 has the same print engine, feeder and paper tray as the 750, and adds:

  • Colour fax, with memory for up to 100 pages.
  • A 3-inch touchscreen.
  • A front USB port for printing photos directly.
  • A slightly higher recommended volume (400 to 1,200 pages a month).

If nobody in your office faxes, the 750 gives you everything else for less. Note that HP's 790 spec sheet lists HP 32XL and 31 ink bottles, while the 581 and 750 use GT53 and GT52, so check the ink before buying either.

Ink and running costs

All three are refilled from bottles that print thousands of pages, so running costs are low compared with cartridge printers. Check the ink code for the exact model and that it's sold near you: GT53 black and GT52 colour for the 581 and 750, HP 32XL and 31 for the 790. Current bottle prices are in our printer ink price list.

Before you pay

Before you buy a printer: what to check

A cheap printer can be expensive to own. A few minutes of checking now saves money every month afterwards.

  1. Check the cost of ink or toner, not just the printer. Find the cartridge or bottle it uses, look up its price and how many pages it prints, and work out the cost per page.

  2. Match the printer to what you print. Mostly black and white documents suit a laser printer; colour, photos and mixed use suit an ink tank. Need to scan and copy too? Get an all-in-one.

  3. Make sure it's genuine and new. Ask whether the box is sealed and whether the starter ink or toner is included. Prices far below other sellers are a warning sign.

  4. Ask about the warranty and who honours it. Keep the receipt and check whether the seller or a local service partner handles repairs.

  5. Check how you'll connect. USB only, or Wi-Fi and phone printing? Confirm before buying if several people will share it.

  6. If it will sit unused for weeks, think twice about inkjet. Ink can dry in the print head. A laser printer copes better with occasional use.
